Barangaroo City Walkway Bridge
The Barangaroo City pedestrian bridge links together Wynyard Station, the Barangaroo precinct and the Darling Harbour waterfront beyond.
The new walkway provides direct access to the Barangaroo precinct from the city via approach ramps and abutments that are composed of a 5m wide, 38m long steel bridge with a glass canopy supported on steel portal frames. G.James’ remit was to provide 21.52mm and 25.52mm Low Iron ToughLam glass.
The painted steel portal frames mounted on both the north and south deck edge girders are arranged in radial fashion to support 2.7m high, toughened and laminated glass screens to the south and 2.2m screens high to the north. The portals above the deck support an overhead glass canopy that extends over the majority of the bridge to shelter users from inclement weather.
At the western abutment stairs and escalators provide vertical circulation via a short steel link span, which is covered by a toughened laminated glass canopy supported on extended steel portal frames.
This provides shelter to the escalators and bridge users alike, in addition to neatly framing views to the waterfront.
